What to Expect After a Gum Graft: A Recovery Guide

If you have a gum graft or soft tissue allograft on the horizon, knowing what recovery looks like can put your mind at ease. The good news: most patients find healing more comfortable than they expected. At Pikes Peak Periodontics in Colorado Springs, Dr. Ursula M. Price walks every patient through aftercare so they know exactly what to do.

The First Few Days

Some swelling and mild tenderness around the treated area is normal and usually peaks in the first day or two. Over-the-counter pain relief is typically all that is needed. You may be asked to avoid brushing the surgical site directly while it begins to heal, and to rinse gently as directed.

Eating and Activity

Stick to soft, cool foods for the first several days — think yogurt, eggs, smoothies (no straw), and pasta — and avoid chewing on the side that was treated. Steer clear of crunchy, spicy, or very hot foods that could irritate the area. Most people return to work and normal routines within a day or two, while avoiding strenuous exercise for a few days.

Supporting the Graft

The graft needs time to integrate with your existing tissue, so following your aftercare instructions closely makes a real difference in the result. Avoid pulling on your lip to look at the area, do not smoke (it slows healing), and keep your follow-up appointments so Dr. Price can monitor your progress. For complete guidance, see our post-op instructions.

When to Call Us

Mild discomfort and swelling are expected, but contact our office if you have heavy bleeding that will not stop, increasing pain or swelling after a few days, or any sign of infection. We are always here to answer questions during your recovery.
