A soft-tissue biopsy is the removal of a small sample of tissue for microscopic examination, allowing oral conditions to be diagnosed accurately and early. At Pikes Peak Periodontics in Colorado Springs, Dr. Ursula M. Price performs biopsies to evaluate suspicious or unexplained changes in the mouth.
When a Biopsy Is Recommended
Your dentist or physician may recommend a biopsy if you have a sore that will not heal, an unusual lump, or a white or red patch in the mouth. Most of these findings turn out to be harmless, but a biopsy is the only way to know for certain — and early diagnosis is key to successfully treating any serious condition.
What to Expect
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and is usually quick. Dr. Price removes a small sample of the tissue in question, which is then sent to a pathology laboratory for analysis. Once results are available, she will review them with you and discuss any next steps.
Recovery and Aftercare
Most patients have only minor soreness at the site for a few days, easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief. You will receive simple instructions to keep the area clean as it heals.
If you have noticed a change in your mouth that has not resolved, do not wait. Call Pikes Peak Periodontics at (719) 548-1711 or request an appointment for an evaluation.
